The MPK249 is a performance keyboard and pad controller with 49 full-size, semi-weighted, velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch. Octave up/down buttons or transposition cover a 10-octave range. Sixteen velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads are arranged in four banks and carry MPC functions: Swing, Note Repeat, Full Level and 16 Levels. An arpeggiator with adjustable resolution, range and patterns is also on board.
Control is handled by 8 faders, 8 360-degree encoders and 8 backlit switches, each in three banks. The unit also works with Akai Pro's VIP 3.0 software, which is described as providing access to a library of VST instruments and effects, and with NKS-mapped instruments from Native Instruments.
It connects to a computer by a single USB port, which can also supply power. There are 5-pin MIDI in and out sockets, plus inputs for a sustain pedal or footswitch and an expression pedal. A software package is included: MPC Beats, MPC Beats Expansions, Ableton Live Lite, Hybrid 3 and Xpand!2, plus a Komplete Select bundle and VIP 3.0, all as downloads.
